Empowering Young People to Stay Safe and Reduce Violence
Youth Peace Summit – Saturday, April 16
Our team members held their own Peace Summit on Saturday, April 16 at the Gary Comer Youth Center with a goal of keeping youth safe this summer.
“This is a time of heightened violence, but there are things young people can do promote peace and minimize their chances of being a victim,” says Steven Washington who uses Peace Circles to help team members learn how to resolve differences.
Co-leaders DeSonni Hardge and Matthew Williams, both 14, gave an overview on the historical background and current state of violence in Chicago. Breakout sessions explored ways to stay safe and work for peace in the community. While team staff members were on hand to assist, all presenters and facilitators were young people. The event was free and other youth groups from around the City participated. Our thanks to Jack and Jill of America Foundation for sponsoring this program.
